ADLs (activities of daily living)
Also called: daily living skills, self-care skills
Definition
ADLs, or activities of daily living, are the routine self-care tasks people do each day to look after themselves — dressing, washing, grooming, toileting, and eating.
ADLs are the foundation of independence and a common focus in occupational therapy and special education. Autistic children often learn them best when each skill is broken down with task analysis, supported with pictures, and taught one step at a time.
Our daily living skills guide covers the methods, and our routine how-tos walk through specific skills step by step.
